David Duchovny fans had been waiting a long time to see their small-screen favorite back on television, but the role he decided to take when returning to carrying a series surprised many who knew him more for his work on “The X-Files.” This time around, instead of a witty special agent, Duchovny was going to play a washed-up, sex-addicted Hollywood writer–who thankfully, is still just as witty as Mulder.

If HBO’s “Entourage” is a look at the best parts of living large in California–fast cars, high definition television sets, an adoring public–then Showtime’s “Californication” is a little bit more of a wake-up call. Darkly funny and a sleeper hit with critics, the show seems to have found its audience now that it begins a third season, with Hank (played by Duchovny) having decided switch careers and pursue teaching at a local college while raising his daughter, who is turning out to be more of a handful than he had initially expected as she gets deeper into her teenage years. Instead of frat-house mansions packed with fridges full of booze and HD TVs in every room, Hank is trying to have a solid and reliable environment for his daughter, but unfortunately, his interest in women is getting in the way a little bit.

In a time where everyone seems to be cutting down a little bit on spending and excess, in an odd way, “Californication” is a welcome reminder that there’s no need to go overboard with hedonism, or even more importantly, that hedonism doesn’t always bring happiness and fulfillment. While Hank clearly enjoys the attention of pretty women and copious amounts of free substances, it’s having to prove that he can be a good father and should have a shot at trying to be a good husband again that really resonates with viewers, with almost a 50% increase in the show’s audience as the third season began.

“Californication” has done more than simply manage to attract enough viewers to keep the show afloat for at least four seasons. With critical praise and a growing audience, not to mention the added media spectacle of Duchovny admitting his own sex addiction and going to rehab, the show is starting to net guest stars of varying levels of fame, some of who go on to become reoccurring characters. From Judy Greer, known for her roles in films such as “27 Dresses” and “American Dreamz” to Kathleen Turner, one of the most famous American actresses of the past few decades, the show’s ability to attract talented actors might be one of the things that keeps it alive and kicking on cable and satellite TV.

The latest big name to be added to the show’s cast is Susan Sarandon’s daugter Eva Amurri. Known for her work in a couple of films, including one with her mother, Amurri plays a stripper/part-time student who ends up catching Hank’s eye when she’s enrolled in one of his classes. Amurri’s acting credited as one of the reasons that so many Showtime viewers have opted to watch “Californication” instead of surfing the channels to see if there’s anything else on satellite TV worth watching after “Dexter” wraps up.

If a darker comedic look at the excesses of California life and the many ways that showbiz can go from dream to nightmare sounds more up your alley than the happy-go-lucky perfect endings of “Entourage,” then tune into Showtime and give “Californication” a chance. Though a sleeper hit, the show’s potential to get excellent is truly palpable.

Motion Picture and Television Production Companies Compete For Sound Stages To Film Multi-Million $$ Projects

The famed 15 acre full services film and tv production facility that has been home to academy award-winning motion pictures such as ?It Happened One Night,? ?From Here To Eternity? and ?The Caine Mutiny? now has its soundstages buzzing with hit television series ?Heroes? and ?Dexter.? Both shows are high atop the ratings at their respective NBC and Showtime networks and occupy many of the newly refurbished 175,00 sq ft of sound stages.

Since Sunset Gower Studios has installed a huge state-of-the-art panoramic cyclorama on one of the stages and recently added the Airplane mock-ups of Air Hollywood on another, available space for production companies is at a premium. In addition to feature films such as ?Alvin & The Chipmunks? (Fox), ?The Good German? (George Clooney), ?Georgia Rule? (Jane Fonda, Lindsey Lohan) and ?The Good Shepherd? (Robert DeNiro) being shot on the lot, there have been music videos, commercials and other TV series all occupying 415,000 sq ft of production and office space.

Also nearing completion is a 96,000 sq ft high rise building that will be leased by Technicolor Post Production services at year?s end. The Northeast corner of the lot boasts the fashionable newly-opened gourmet restaurant Eat On Sunset, with the large commissary on the lot providing daily fare for the thousands of talented crew members while in production. According to studio VP of Sales and Marketing Terri Melkonian, ?

The directing and writing duo of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have are known for two films under their belt, Crank and its sequel Crank: High Voltage. Described by the two as ?Pure ADD candy?, the Crank films were high-octane, adrenalized and plastered with action. On the other hand, when it comes to story progression and character development, I?ve seen more artistic qualities in most Steven Seagal films. Enter Neveldine and Taylor?s latest effort, Gamer, a film that the two believe will make their peers and film goers aware that they can create movies with feeling and soul. Sheesh?..

Set in that overtly popular place known as the ?not too distant future?, Gamer?s backdrop is a society that is centered on visual entertainment and hardcore violence (much like our own). One particular video game entitled ?Slayers? is a mass scale multi-player online game in which players assume the role of an avatar and face off in full-scale combat. The catch? The avatars are real life death-row inmates, forced to fight through special mind-control technology created by a Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall of the hit Showtime series ?Dexter?). The most prolific of these gladiators is Kable (300?s Gerard Butler), controlled by gamer Simon (Logan Lerman). Like many Hollywood convicts , Kable has been jailed for a crime he didn?t commit and he believes that ?Slayers? will lead him to his eventual release and reunion with his family.

While the main premise of Gamer is very Point A to Point B, several sub-plots give the story some more depth. One involves Angie Tillman, Kable?s wife (played by Amber Valetta), finding herself trapped as an avatar in ?Society?, a social networking community filled with smut and sexual deviance. Another involves the Humanz, an underground unit whose aim is to put an end to Castle and his game.

If you?ve seen the aforementioned Crank films, you should be very well aware that Neveldine and Taylor?s style of cinematography is comparable to Mike Tyson circa 1989, they want to knock you on your ass and they are going to do it as quick and relentless as possible. This time around, they are incorporating a new kind of camera called RED, which delivers, as they describe, a smooth and silky quality to the picture. While I found this tidbit interesting, what really caught my attention was the limited use of green screen for the film. Nearly every scene is shot in a real location, including a gypsum mine that is at an altitude of 7,000 feet. In a day and age where nearly everything is created and rendered with CGI, I found this aspect of their filmmaking rather refreshing.

As for the storytelling, it appears that the duo is taking pages from sci-fi action film like The Running Man, Escape From NY, No Escape and Death Race. They then take the concept of the massive multiplayer games like Battlefield, Unreal and Halo and throw that into the cauldron.

For an action star, Gerard Butler is an ideal choice. Since 300, the guy has joined the likes of Hugh Jackman, Jason Statham, Clive Owen and others in a legion of modern day action film badassery. He does everything that makes the general action audience happy; wear a sleeveless shirt that displays his well sculpted biceps, bare a tough guy countenance that hardly cracks a smile and say clever, hard ass tough guy things that makes fan boys get up and cheer.

To be honest, in spite of their efforts to create respectable art, Gamer comes off as generic, high energy action film, only with a unique twist that is based off of today?s video game technology. On the other hand, there is one major saving grace. While it will hook in the usual young crowd of film goers who seek their fill of hard-R action and good guy coolness, it just may get all of those MMO-addicted gamers off their butts. You know who I am talking about, yes? The ones who spend countless hours, sacrificing jobs, relationships, and overall credibility as functioning humans all for the sake of Everquest and World of Warcraft. That is if they can stop playing long enough to be aware of the movie.

I?m not sure if the people in Cape Coral, Florida are aware of this, but one of Cape Coral?s citizens has a very, very dark mind. I?m not sure of where he lives in Cape Coral, but if people of Cape Coral want to take a deep look into his mind they need to turn on Showtime and find out.

Whenever discussing my favorite television shows, I cannot go without mentioning the Showtime series Dexter. It involves one of the most vile, brilliant concepts on television today.

Metropolitan Home and Showtime have teamed up again this year, following the success of last year?s Showtime House with even bigger and better plans for this year?s installation. This time, 14 renowned designers will transform not one, but two New York penthouses into the ultimate multimedia showhouse with rooms inspired by Showtime’s 6 Original Series; Californication, Dexter, Nurse Jackie, The Tudors, United States of Tara and Weeds. While last year?s centerpiece muse was Dexter, this year?s seems to be Hank Moody (character played by David Duchovny) of Californication. The hit show fuses Hank?s hometown of NYC with his latest place of residence, Hollywood, and all the sinful temptations that come with it. With Hank, Hollywood, sex, and bad habits as their inspiration, designers Markus Dochantschi, Susannah Drake, and Joannah Kornak for Holly Hunt each interpreted the sinful plotline as fuel for their stunning spaces.

For Dexter, who?s been leading a much different and conflicted lifestyle in recent plotlines of the show, designer and former TV Producer Marie Aiello created a Foyer/Gallery, Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen and Terrace to capture the many sides of this complex character played by Michael C. Hall. Whether Dexter is passing through the foyer, hanging out in the living room with the kids, or thoughtfully cutting vegetables on the kitchen countertops with a newly sharpened knife, Marie Aiello has designed a space to accommodate the many sides of Dexter. ?I want my space to speak to Dexter?s conflict and inner torment but be rendered in not so obvious ways. Each room is sophisticated and seductive but not too pretty,? says Aiello.
